Amos 5:7-8

You who turn judgment to wormwood and leave off righteousness in the earth Seek HIM that makes the seven stars and Orion and turns the shadow of death into the [light of] morning and makes the day dark with night that calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the face of the earth YHWH is his name; ס Samech.

Comments: Hosea 5:8 Verse :8 ends with an untranslated, **stand-alone, Hebrew letter, samech, which has a meaning of surround, protect, to prop up, to support. So, we see that in addition to everything else YHWH says in Hosea 5:8, HE ends the message with a reminder that HE is Israel’s protection and sustainer.

Along with the reminder of who HE is, we would do well to remember that we, also, are commanded to not to oppress the poor and the orphans. We are commanded to protect and be a support to those who have no strength. We are not to pervert justice and goodness. That is SAMECH.

** Many passages in the Hebrew Bible end with stand-alone letters that carry great meaning. Most lexicons and concordances do not mention these, and if they do, they shrug them off as inarticulate and untranslatable. This is slothful rubbish, when translators know that Hebrew letters have not only sounds but meanings. Simple footnotes explaining this would more than suffice. But lay-people remain ignorant, thus having their personal study stunted if they fully trust translators who know full-well these stand-alone letters are present in the text.

This contributes to the power spiritual leaders have due to knowledge and understanding they possess that lay-people do not. The imbalance of power between the learned and the unlearned is a deliberate and carefully maintained balance of power. The good news is that the unlearned can learn if they so desire.
