Titus 1:9-11 commentary

Paul used strong language in dealing with false teachers. He did not merely say they deceived people and led them into error--which is bad enough; he wrote that through error, their victims were overthrown.
In English, to overthrow means to bring about downfall or destruction. The Greek word, anatrepō, which is used in this passage, means the same.
It is unfortunate that Bible commentators mitigate the "destruction" spoken of in this passage by adding the word “figuratively” in their definitions the word, anatrepō.

Holding fast the Faithful Word as he has been taught that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers specially they of the circumcision Whose mouths must be stopped who overthrow [anatrepō] entire households [1] 2 Timothy 3:6 teaching things which they ought not for filthy lucre's sake
Titus 1:9-11

[1]  There is nothing figurative about an eternity of destruction that results from being spiritually overthrown. And Paul says this is what is being done by false teachers, whose primary goal is to financially sack their victims.
Victims are plundered both spiritually and financially through deceit and greed.  They are financially overthrown  when income streams or wealth is funneled to false teachers or when they liquidate and turn their entire net worth over to these wolves.
Contending for the faith is serious business.
The motivation of false teachers is generally greed, and they prey on either legitimate needs of their victims or on their victim’s sins or weaknesses. One of the most common weaknesses in the Body of Christ, is not having a working, conversive, knowledge of the Bible.
There is great protection in being full of the knowledge of God—which can only happen if we fill our minds and spirits with His Word and ask the Holy Spirit to give us understanding. That means we must read it for ourselves and not depend entirely on the interpretations of others. The Word of God encompasses every part of the Armor of God—most of which is defensive, protective. Knowing the Word and acting on it is a protection from the many snares the enemy of our souls lays for us.
So we see that contending for the faith is an urgent business and involves biblical literacy.
One thing is true of most victims; they quickly become defensive of their teacher and conversive in the false doctrine they embrace. When defending their paradigm or leader, they memorize talking points, mantras, and slogans that discourage productive discussion.
Believers who depend on daily Bible devotions and Bible studies for all their Bible knowledge can still be biblically illiterate.
Daily devotions can be helpful but are  limited. When these are the sum of our Bible reading, the vast majority of the Bible never gets read. The only way to ensure the protection of biblical literacy is to read our entire Bibles on a daily and systematic basis. This writer, recommends reading our Bibles every day, always picking up today where we left off yesterday.

Galatians Chapter 1: Covering, Apostles, Another Gospel

1: Paul an apostle not of audawm neither by audawm but by Jesus Christ and Father God who raised him from the dead[1] 2: And all the brethren who are with me to the churches of Galatia 3: Grace be to you and peace from Father God and from our Lord Jesus Christ 4: Who gave himself for our sins that he might deliver us out of this present evil age according to the will of God and our Father 5: To whom be glory for ever and ever Amen 6: I marvel that you are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ to heteros euaggelion neuter noun 7: Which is not another but there be some that trouble you and would pervert the message of Christ 8: But though we or an angel from Heaven preach any other gospel to you than that which we have preached unto you let them be accursed 9: As we said before so say I now again If any euaggelizō preposition para preposition euaggelizō than that you [have already] received estō anathema 10: For do I now persuade audawm or God or do I seek to please audawm for if I yet pleased audawm I should not be the servant of Christ 11: But I certify you brethren that euaggelion ὁ euaggelizō hypo me is not after audawm 12: For I neither received it para audawm neither was I taught it but dia a revelation of Jesus Christ Acts 9:1-16 13: For you have heard of my life-style in time past in the Jews’ religion how that beyond measure I persecuted the Church of God and wasted it 14: And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers 15: But when it pleased God who separated me from my mother’s womb and called me by his grace, 16: to reveal his Son in me that I might preach him among the heathen immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood 17: Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me but I went into Arabia and returned again to Damascus[2] 18: Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter and abode with him fifteen days 19: But other of the apostles saw I none save James the Lord’s brother[3] 20: Now the things which I write to you behold before God I lie not 21: Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia 22: And was unknown by face to the churches of Judaea which were in Christ 23: But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preaches the faith which once he destroyed.
24: And they glorified God in me.

[1] From the very beginning of his walk with Christ, God arranged for Paul to connect with his ekklēsia through Ananias. This was a bond which allowed Paul to connect with the other apostles and eventually work more closely with them. But he continually stresses that he neither asked for nor needed any person or organization’s permission or covering (protection) in going forth and doing the work of the ministry God had called him to.
[2] Paul did not wait. From practically the moment he got saved, he asked no one’s permission, but immediately obeyed the calling of God to preach Jesus. Remember, though, that Paul, being a Pharisee, already had extensive knowledge of the scriptures, which are able to make us wise unto salvation. Once his eyes were opened, once he was born again and filled with the Holy Spirit, he had understanding from God as to how the scriptures revealed Christ. He could see with devastating clarity how, thinking he was doing God a service, he had actually been raging against God himself.
[3] To those who teach that Jesus only called 12 apostles and no more, this verse alone refutes that theory. The count from this one verse is up to 15: The original 12, Matthias (13), James the Lord’s brother (14), Paul (15). Other passages reveal even more apostles. Apostles are still called today. The gift was given to the Church, to build and edify until we are all perfected. That will not happen in full until Jesus returns.

Do you have the assurance of knowing that if you died today, you have Eternal Life?

Acts Chapter 15: Equality Racism and New Testament Prophets

1: And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren and said Except you be circumcised after the manner of Moses you cannot be saved 2: When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain other of them should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about this question 3: And being brought on their way by the church they passed through Phenice and Samaria declaring the conversion of the Gentiles and they caused great joy to all the brethren 4: And when they were come to Jerusalem they were received of the church and of the apostles and elders and they declared all things that God had done with them 5: But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed saying That it was needful to circumcise them and to command them to keep the law of Moses 6: And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter 7: And when there had been much disputing Peter rose up and said to them Men and brethren you know how that a good while ago God made choice among us that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel and believe 8: And God who knows the hearts bore them witness giving them the Holy Ghost even as he did to us 9: And put no difference between us and them Galatians 3:28 purifying their hearts by faith 10: Now therefore why tempt ye God to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear 11: But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved even as they 12: Then all the multitude kept silence and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them 13: And after they had held their peace James answered saying Men and brethren listen to me 14: Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles to take out of them a people for his name 15: And to this agree the words of the prophets as it is written 16: After this I will return and will build again the tabernacle of David which is fallen down and I will build again the ruins thereof and I will set it up 17: That the residue of people might seek after the Lord and all the Gentiles upon whom my name is called says the Lord who does all these things 18: Known to God are all his works from the beginning of the world 19: Wherefore my sentence is that we trouble not them which from among the Gentiles are turned to God 20: But that we write to them that they abstain from pollutions of idols and from fornication and from things strangled and from blood 21: For Moses of old time has in every city them that preach him being read in the synagogues every Sabbath day 22: Then pleased it the apostles and elders with the whole church to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas namely Judas surnamed Barsabas and Silas chief men among the brethren 23: And they wrote letters by them after this manner The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting to the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia 24: Forasmuch as we have heard that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words subverting your souls saying You must be circumcised and keep the law to whom we gave no such commandment 25: It seemed good to us being assembled with one accord to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul 26: Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ 27: We have sent therefore Judas and Silas who shall also tell you the same things by mouth 28: For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things 29: That you abstain from meats offered to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication from which if you keep yourselves you shall do well Fare ye well 30: So when they were dismissed they came to Antioch and when they had gathered the multitude together they delivered the epistle 31: Which when they had read they rejoiced for the consolation 32: And Judas and Silas being prophets also themselves exhorted the brethren with many words and confirmed them 33: And after they had tarried there a space they were let go in peace from the brethren to the apostles 34: Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still 35: Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch teaching and preaching the word of the Lord with many others also 36: And some days after Paul said to Barnabas Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord and see how they do 37: And Barnabas determined to take with them John whose surname was Mark 38: But Paul thought not good to take him with them who departed from them from Pamphylia and went not with them to the work 39: And the contention was so sharp between them that they departed asunder one from the other and so Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus 40: And Paul chose Silas and departed being recommended by the brethren to the grace of God 41: And he went through Syria and Cilicia confirming the churches
