1 John 2 Commentary

1: My little children these things write I to you that you sin not And if ever any sin we have an advocate with the Father [1] Jesus Christ the righteous 2: And he is the appeasement for our sins and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world 3: And hereby we do know that we know him Jesus if we keep his Jesus’ commandments [2] 4: They that say I know him and keep not his commandments are liars and the truth is not in them 5: But whoso keeps his word in them truly is the love of God perfected this is how we know that we are in him In Christ 6: They that say they abide in him ought themselves also so to walk even as he walked [3] 7: Brothers and sisters I write no new commandment to you but an old commandment which you had from the beginning The old commandment is the word which you have heard from the beginning 8: Again a new commandment I write to you which thing is true in him and in you because the darkness is past and the true light Jesus now shines 9: They that say they are in the light in Christ and hate their brothers [and sisters] are in darkness even until now 10: They that love their brothers [and sisters] abide in the light and there is none occasion of stumbling in them 11: But they that hate their brothers [and sisters] are in darkness and walk in darkness and know not where they go because that darkness has blinded their eyes 12: I write to you little boys and girls because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake 13: I write to you fathers because you have known him that is from the beginning John 1:1 I write to you youths because you have overcome the wicked one I write to you little children because you have known the Father 14: I have written to you fathers because you have known him that is from the beginning I have written to you youths because you are strong and the word of God abides in you and you have overcome the wicked one 15: Love not the [world]-system neither the things that are in the system If ever any love the system the love of the Father is not in them 16: For all that is in the [world]-system the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life Genesis 2 is not of the Father but is of the [world]-system 17: And the world-system passes away and the lust thereof but they that do the will of God abide forever 18: Little children it is the last time last days and as you have heard that antichrist shall come even now are there many antichrists this is how we know that it is the last time Last days 19: They went out from us but they were not of us for if they had been of us they would no doubt have continued with us but they went out that they might be made manifest exposed that they were not all of us 20: But you have an unction from the Holy One and you know all things 21: I have not written to you because you know not the truth but because you know it and that no lie is of the truth 22: Who is a liar but they that deny that Jesus is the Christ They are antichrist that deny the Father and the Son [4] 23: Whoever denies the Son the same has not the Father (but) they that acknowledge the Son have the Father also 24: Let that therefore abide in you which you have heard from the beginning If that which you have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, you also shall continue in the Son and in the Father 25: And this is the promise that he has promised us even eternal life 26: These things have I written to you concerning them that seduce you [5] 27: But the anointing which you have received of him (Jesus) abides in you and you need not that any teach you but as the same anointing teaches you of all things and is truth and is no lie and even as it has taught you, you shall abide in him 28: And now little children abide in him that when he shall appear we may have confidence and not be ashamed before him at his coming [6] 29: If you know that he is righteous you know that every one that does righteousness is born of him

[1] Matthew 1:18-20 18: Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph before they came together she was found with child by the Holy Ghost…the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is by the Holy Ghost.
see also Luke 1:35

Mary got pregnant by the Holy Spirit. That makes the Holy Spirit Jesus’ father. Yahweh is the Father. The Holy Spirit is the Father. Jesus is the Everlasting Father. Jesus is YHWH. Jesus is God.

[2] 1 John 2:3 It is Jesus’ commandments John is telling us to keep. What are Jesus’ commandments (see notes on Matthew 5:17-19)?

[3] 1 John 2:6 John is not commanding believers to be observant. Jesus was observant because he was a man born under the Law Galatians 4:4.

Jesus said he came to satisfy the requirements (pay the debt), and he did by his death on the cross John 19:30.

What about what Jesus said in [3] Matthew 5:19? Before the cross, Jesus had not yet satisfied all the requirements of the Law John 19:30. Context: In Matthew 5:17-19 (and in Luke 16:17), he was speaking from the position of still being under the Law. The requirements/sin debt had not yet been paid. To say that after the requirements were satisfied [the debt was paid] at the Cross John 19:30, all are still required to observe the Mosaic Law is misleading and takes the words of Jesus out of context.

[4] 1 John 2:22 How can anyone say Christians and Muslims worship the same God when Allah has no son?

[5] 1 John 2:26 What are they being seduced with? In most of the New Testament, we read of believers being seduced with returning to the requirements of the Law.

[6] 1 John 2:28 Why would a believer be ashamed before Christ at his coming unless they had fallen away? This must be a reference to his 2nd Coming.

[1] Punctuation, chapter, and verse segmentation was added long after the scriptures were written. They are helpful up to a point but often cloud [or cast misunderstanding upon] the meaning some passages. This commentary has done away with most punctuation, but most verse numbers are left intact except in certain cases like verses :1-2 of Revelation chapter three.
[2] See footnote in Revelation 1:4 of this blog
[3] This can only be a reference to the Rapture and not the 2nd Coming. At the 2nd Coming of Christ, every eye will see him and understand exactly what they are seeing. At the Rapture, many will not. Though the Rapture will not be secret, there will be many who by choice refuse to perceive what has happened. Graves will be opened, the dead raised, and those in Christ who are alive and remain will disappear before the very eyes of many as they are caught up to join the resurrected ones and meet the Lord in the air. Many who are left behind will deny what has taken place. Those who are not “In Christ” [though they profess themselves to be] will be caught by surprise; the day will come upon them as a thief. They will refuse to perceive and accept what has happened, and, to their eternal doom, will embrace the lie 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18, 5:1-9, 2 Thessalonians 2:2-12.
[5] The Bible phrase “the whole world” or “all the world,” could mean the entire earth but does not necessarily mean so. Some examples of only part of the earth being called the “whole world” include:  Luke 2:1, Acts 11:28, 17:6, 19:27, 24:5, Romans 10:18. But Jesus did say a time of trial was coming that would effect the entire world. His wording left no doubt that he was not speaking of region upheaval but clearly global. And he commanded his followers to pray that they would be counted worthy to escape all the terrors that would come as a snare upon those who would not see it coming. Why will they not see it coming? Because they will refuse to believe what is written  Luke 21:33-36.  John Bunyan wrote an awesome allegory about literal truths found in the Bible. What a tragedy that, today, many believe the Bible itself to be an allegory. That would mean John Bunyan wrote an allegory about an allegory—Which he did not. If that had been the case, then understanding the truth of the allegories in Pilgrim’s Progress would be an utter impossibility. Though the Bible features some allegorical illustrations, such as the parable of the sower, these always illustrate literal truths.  Any allegorical [illustrative], symbolic, or figurative speech found in the Bible is also defined within the Bible itself.
[6] The Great Tribulation Matthew 24:21-22 is a time of trial coming upon the whole earth, and one of its purposes is to test them “that dwell in The Land.” The congregations in Asia were composed of Jews who had been dispersed into Asia Acts 2:5-10, 1 Peter 1:1-2 These understood that the reference [in The Revelation] to “The Land” was a reference to the land of Israel—The Promised Land Psalm 37:3 . The Great Tribulation is called by another name in the Old Testament. Jeremiah, under the direct inspiration of God, called it, “The Time of Jacob’s Trouble.” Jeremiah 30:7. Though Christians are called the spiritual “Seed of Abraham,” New Covenant believers are never called “JacobJeremiah 30:10. We would be remiss to overlook the many overtly Jewish aspects of The Revelation.

[7] Amen is a Hebrew word meaning: so it is, so be it, may it be fulfilled. It was a custom, which passed over from the synagogues to the Christian assemblies, that when they who had read or discoursed, had offered up solemn prayer to God, the others responded Amen, and thus made the substance of what was uttered their own. Jesus is THE AMEN, meaning he stands behind his Word, whether it be his Word about coming again or his Word that says his ears are open to our prayers. If THE AMEN stands behind his Word, that means we can stand on it.
[8] 24: They said therefore among themselves Let us not rend it but cast lots for it whose it shall be that the scripture might be fulfilled which saith They parted my raiment among them and for my vesture they did cast lots These things therefore the soldiers did
Matthew fills in the gap between what happened during the time the soldiers cast lots for his clothes and what happened next. Darkness covered the land while Jesus hung there suffering for three hours—waiting for the sins of the world to be laid on him.
(Matthew 27:45-46)
25: Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother and his mother's sister Mary the wife of Cleophas and Mary Magdalene 26: When Jesus therefore saw his mother and the disciple standing by whom he loved he saith unto his mother Woman, behold thy son! 27: Then saith he to the disciple Behold thy mother And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home 28: After this Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst 29: Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar and they filled a sponge with vinegar and put it upon hyssop and put it to his mouth 30: When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar he said It is FINISHED Paid! and he bowed his head and gave up the ghost

[9] The Call-out in Laodicea were not “on fire for Jesus,” a condition in which God might have been able to deal with them from his Word and by his SPIRIT to temper any over-zealousness that might have been present [but was not]. Likewise, if their hearts had been cold to the things of God, he may have been able to deal with them to repent of attitudes that led to such coldness. Sadly, that was not the case either. The Called-out in Laodicea just did not care. They were in the precarious position of “straddling the fence….” positioned to not just fall away but to be vehemently cast away—forcefully vomited or spewed—out of God’s mouth.

2 Timothy 2 commentary

1: Thou therefore my son be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus 2: And the things heard from me among many witnesses the same commit to faithful ones who shall be able to teach others also 3: Thou therefore endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ 4: No one that [goes to] war entangles themselves with the affairs of this life that they may please him who chose them to be soldiers 5: And if any strives for victory yet are they not crowned except they strive lawfully 6: The farmer that labors must be first partaker of the fruits 7: Consider what I say and the Master give you understanding in all things 8: Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead[1] according to my glad tidings [good news] 9: Because of which I suffer hardship as an criminal even to imprisonment but the Word of God is not chained 10: Because of this I endure all [for the] Eklektos ἐκλεκτός (elect, chosen, called out from) because of διά the Eklektos that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory[2] 11: It is a faithful saying For if we die with him we shall also live with him 12: If we suffer [we shall] symbasileuō καί symbasileuō rule and reign with [him] If we reject him he also will reject us[3] 13: If we believe not yet he abides faithful He cannot deny himself 14: Of these things put them in remembrance charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit but to the subverting of the hearers 15: Study to show yourself approved unto God a workman that needs not to be ashamed rightly discerning the Word of Truth[4] 16: But shun profane and vain babblings for they will increase unto more ungodliness 17: And their word will eat as does a canker of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus 18: Who concerning the truth have erred saying that the resurrection is past already and overthrow the faith of some[5] 19: Nevertheless the foundation of God stands sure having this seal The Lord knows them that are his And Let every one that names the name of Christ depart from iniquity 20: But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver but also of wood and of earth and some to honour and some to dishonour 21: If a man therefore purge himself from these he shall be a vessel unto honour sanctified and meet for the master's use and prepared unto every good work 22: Flee also youthful lusts but follow righteousness faith love peace with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart 23: But foolish and unlearned questions avoid knowing that they do gender strifes 24: And the servant of the Lord must not strive but be gentle unto all men apt to teach patient 25: In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth 26: And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil who are taken captive by him at his will[6]

[1] The body of Jesus, the only Christ (Anointed One) was raised physically from the dead. Some teach the resurrection of Jesus was only a spiritual one rather than physical, but this verse describes the “Seed of” David rising from the dead. It is no contradiction to say that the body of Jesus, who was a physical descendant of King David, rose from the grave and when his body was raise, he rose as a life-giving spirit as well.

[2] Under the New Covenant, the Church is called the spiritual seed of Abraham. The Body of Christ is the Church, God’ elect. And according to this verse, the elect includes those who are not yet saved. But being the elect does not negate a personal choice to make Jesus our Savior. It is God’s will that all be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth 1 Timothy 2:5. Therefore, all are the elect. Jesus said, many are called but few are chosen, because it is always our choice in whether we are chosen or not. Jesus said a time is coming when even the elect might be deceived Matthew 24:24. Under the Old Covenant, all Israel was God’s elect, but what about those in Israel [the elect] who sacrificed their children to Ba’al and were given over to their enemies and into captivity and died in their sins? God was speaking of, those in Israel, the elect, in Ezekiel 3:18-20.

[3] This verse appears to refute the doctrine of eternal security.

[4] The only way to “rightly discern” the Word of Truth, is to approach biblical understanding with the help of the Holy Spirit along with a working knowledge of the Bible—all of it. This can only be done If you read your Bibles in a systematic manner. This writer recommends reading your Bibles every day, always picking up today where you left off yesterday. If you do this, you will eventually read every word [over and over again] and in that way gain a more comprehensive knowledge of what the Bible does and does not say. Gaining a working knowledge of the Bible is important from a theological perspective, but is even more important from a Christian growth and "relationship with Christ" perspective.

[5] Paul was not bound by the, “Don’t be judgemental!” and politically correct paradigms that seem to rule Christian thought in these last days (we have been in the last days for over 2000 years Acts 2:16-17). He did not shy away from naming names when it was necessary in contending for the faith and protecting his flock.

[6] When we refuse to receive biblical instruction, we are not just opposing God, but opposing ourselves. We become our own worst enemy by placing ourselves under the jurisdiction of the enemy of our souls.

Spiritual warfare begins with obedience to God and to what we understand concerning His Word. Jesus said, “Be doers of the Word and not hearers only.” He warned of dire consequences to those who heard but did not do.” Great strength comes from faith in God’s Word, and obedience is part of faith Matthew 7:24-27, Romans 10:17.
