Colossians 2 commentary

1: For I would that you knew what great conflict spiritual warfare? I have for you and for them at Laodicea and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh 2: That their hearts might be comforted being together united in love and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding to the acknowledgement of the mystery; God and Father and the Christ [1] 3: In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge 4: And this I say that not any one beguile you with persuasive speech 5: For though I be absent in the flesh yet am I with you in the spirit joying and beholding your orderly condition and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ [2] 6: As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord [3] so walk ye in him 7: Rooted and built up in him and established in the faith as you have been taught abounding therein with thanksgiving 8: Beware lest any despoil you through philosophy and vain deceit after the principles of mortals after the rudiments of the arrangements and systems of this world and not after Christ 9: For in him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead in physical form [4]10: And you are complete in him [5] who is the head of every sovereignty and authority Ephesians 6:12 11: In whom also you are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ 12: Buried with him in baptism wherein also you are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God who has raised him from the dead [6] John 2:19-21 13: And you being dead in your offenses and the uncircumcision of your flesh has he made alive together with him having forgiven you all offenses 14: Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances nomon of Ephesians 2:15 that was against us which was contrary to us and took it out of the way nailing it to his cross 15: And having stripped the sovereignties and the authorities he made a show of them openly triumphing over them in it 16: Because of this [Col 2:14/Eph 2:15] let no one judge you in food or in drink or in respect of an holyday or of the new moon or of the sabbath days 17: Which are a foreshadow of things to come Hebrews 10:1 but the Body is of Christ 18: Let no one defraud you of your reward through a voluntary humility and ritual of messengers [7] intruding into those things which they have not seen, vainly puffed up by their fleshly minds 19: And not holding [to] the Head from which all the Body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered and knit together increases with the increase of God [8] Headship defined 20: Wherefore if you be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world why as though living in the world are you subject to ordinances 21: Touch not taste not handle not 22: Which all are to perish with the using after the commandments and teachings of mortals 23: Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in worship [of our own] will[power] and humility and neglecting of the body not in any honor to the satisfying of the flesh

[1] Colossians 2:2 In this verse, we see the Godhead [God] referenced with the members of the Godhead [the Father and the Christ] mentioned individually.

[2] Colossians 2:5 Paul is rejoicing in the spiritual victory of the believers in Laodicea [located in Turkey], but this is not to last. Later, in The Revelation Revelation 3:14-18, Jesus’ message to the messenger of Laodicea showed the dire condition into which they had fallen. Materialism had all but destroyed their godly spirituality.

[3] Colossians 2:6 To the Jew, there is but one Lord. Was Paul calling Jesus Adonai? Jesus is God.

[4] Colossians 2:9 It does not get any clearer than this. The phrase: “All of the fullness…,” leaves no room for argument. Jesus is Jehovah John 14:9 references the Father as the Godhead

[5] Colossians 2:9-10 are connected. Because the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Jesus bodily, those who belong to him are also complete. Jesus is not half God and half man. He is fully and completely God. Jesus is Jehovah. He said, “if you believe not that I AM you shall die in your sins” John 8:24. Jesus is also fully and completely human. Likewise, every human is created in the complete image of God. There is no “female” image of God separate from the male image of God, requiring a combination of the two to form a complete image of God. Complementarian teaching on the female/male image of God is false. But, since the Fall, every mortal is missing something. Until we come to Christ, it is a true saying that there is a God-shaped vacuum in every person. Once we are born again, that vacuum is filled, because makes the bodies of all believers his dwelling place through the power of the Holy Spirit. When we, through faith and repentance, choose Christ, we become complete in Him.

[6] Colossians 2:12 is a reference to the Godhead. We know this because in Genesis, chapter one, “God” is introduced as Creator in his fullness, as Elohiym (the Godhead). In John chapter two, Jesus claimed he would raise himself from the dead. At the grave of Lazarus, Jesus claimed that HE was the physical embodiment of the resurrection. In the Book of Acts, the Holy Spirit is identified as God Acts 5:3-4. All of the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Jesus bodily. Jesus is Jehovah, the Father is Jehovah, the Holy Spirit is Jehovah, and all general references to God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, in  either the Old Covenant or the Covenant that makes New, are references to the Godhead.

[7] Colossians 2:18 shows that those who teach that Jesus is not Jehovah, but is Michael the Archangel, are in error. Another witness to this, is found in Hebrews chapter one, where the question is asked, “To which of the angels did He say, thou art my Son This day have I begotten thee?” Jesus is not an angel. In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and The God was the Word.

[8] Colossians 2:19 defines headship. Christ is the Head [kephale] because he is the Creator of all things. He is our Head because we are his offspring (Acts 17:28).
